Lords and Ladies -arum maculatum– is a very useful plant for growing on sites that have deep or semi shade such as hedgerow bottoms or woodlands. Plants require rich, damp soils to establish successfully. Lords and Ladies has unusual shiny green leaves and brown flowers that emerge in April and May and are low growing These are followed by a stem of bright red berries later in the season that provide food for birds. It is worth noting that this is a particularly toxic plant to humans and should always be handled with care. Alternative names for Lords and Ladies include Cuckoo Pint, Red hot poker, and Ram’s horn.
