Water Avens -geum rivale– is an attractive wetland plant that grows well on moist soil and is found in water meadows and wet woodland. It will grow in sun or full shade, attracting a variety of insects including bees, and dragonflies. Water Avens is a low growing plant and produces creamy pink flowers from May to September. The foliage provides useful ground cover. In gardens Water Avens can be introduced at the edge of a pond where it looks best growing amongst other wetland plants such as Purple loosestrife, Hemp agrimony, Gypsywort, Fleabane, Meadow sweet and Water Mint. In a woodland setting it might look best with Red campion, Wood Crane’s Bill and Nettle leaved bellflower.
